Chris Hemsworth Reflects on Health, Family, and Career: “I've Never Felt Better”
Chris Hemsworth, beloved for his role as Thor, has shared a rare health update as he steps back into the Hollywood spotlight. After previously expressing concerns that his career could be affecting his wellbeing, Hemsworth is now feeling more optimistic than ever at 41.
Hemsworth has been a familiar face in Hollywood since his early days on Home and Away. But in 2022, while filming Limitless, a National Geographic series on Disney+, Hemsworth learned he carries two copies of the APOE4 gene, making him eight to 10 times more likely to develop Alzheimer's than the general population.
This revelation was difficult for him. He admitted, “It really kind of p***ed me off because it felt like I had been vulnerable with something personal.” The actor chose to be transparent with his fans, sharing the news in a candid interview with Vanity Fair. However, this led to widespread speculation that Hemsworth was retiring or already facing early signs of the disease.
Speaking recently to Body + Soul magazine, Hemsworth reflected on his diagnosis, saying, “The imagined scenario is always worse than the reality.” He spent the past year recovering from a back injury he sustained while filming Thor: Love and Thunder, and used that time to mentally come to terms with his genetic predisposition.
Despite the heavy news, Hemsworth says he’s never been more optimistic about his health and career. After turning 41 in August and marking the five-year anniversary of his popular fitness app, Centr, he’s feeling more balanced than ever. Relocating to Los Angeles in early October for a filming project, he shared that learning to slow down and reflect has helped him make clearer decisions. “It’s in the quieter moments of reflection and stillness that I can make decisions based on real purpose and drive,” he said.
Slowing Down and Finding BalanceHemsworth also opened up about how the relentless pace of his career led him to reevaluate his priorities. “I was going from job to job and constantly stressed,” he recalled. “I was always giving an extra 20%, but sometimes it was excessive, and it had diminishing returns.” He realized that pushing himself mentally and physically wasn’t sustainable. “It’s better that I miss out on a film than sacrifice my wellbeing,” he noted.
Now, Hemsworth is focusing on balancing his career with spending time with his family. He has planned time with his wife, Elsa Pataky, and their three children—India Rose, 12, and twin sons Sasha and Tristan, 10—at their Byron Bay home in Australia. Between filming, the family enjoys surfing, riding dirt bikes, and horseback riding.
Despite his break, Hemsworth has continued to star in major films, recently walking the red carpet with his twin boys in Sydney for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, where he played the film’s villain opposite Anya Taylor-Joy.
As he returns to superhero shape, Hemsworth has made significant changes to his fitness routine. In the past, he believed that if he didn’t leave the gym completely exhausted, he hadn’t worked hard enough. Now, he’s kinder to himself. “I’m listening to my body more and being patient with the process. I don’t need to smash myself in every single session,” he explained.
Meditation has also become a vital part of his wellness routine, although he admits it’s not always easy. When asked if he uses the guided meditations from his own Centr app, he laughed, saying, “I read a lot of sleep meditations on it, so I don’t want to go to sleep listening to the sound of my own voice.”
Career, Family, and Overcoming Childhood ChallengesHemsworth has also opened up about his workaholic tendencies, revealing that his drive to succeed stems from a challenging childhood. In an emotional moment during Limitless, Hemsworth admitted, “I did acting to get my parents out of debt. When I first started, they had very little money, and it was stressful to see them struggle.” Despite his success and a net worth of over AU$220 million, he still feels unresolved stress related to his upbringing.
Hemsworth lives in a $30 million mansion with his family, yet the actor remains grounded, focusing on what really matters—his health, family, and mental wellbeing. With his return to Hollywood, Hemsworth is proving that balance is possible, even in a high-pressure career.
