Election Worker Terminated After Ballots Fall from Truck in Florida
An election worker in Florida has been dismissed after a sealed container and bag of ballots fell off a truck, according to officials from the local elections office. The incident occurred in Miami-Dade County, where the Elections Department reported on Tuesday that the employee neglected to secure the truck's back door properly. As they drove away, one sealed bin and one sealed bag, both containing ballots that had already been cast during early voting, fell out.
The department explained that this Monday incident was attributed to “human error.” In a statement, they noted that upon reaching the police department, elections staff confirmed that all seals were intact and that there had been no tampering or damage to the ballots. Once back at the Elections Headquarters, staff verified that all items were accounted for, and the seals were checked again.
Christina White, the county's elections supervisor, informed the Miami Herald that the ballots had already been scanned and tabulated at a library designated for early voting. Video footage shared by Only in Dade showed a bystander discovering the bag and bin along the Turnpike extension in Cutler Bay. The county's election office commended the resident for promptly delivering the ballots to the police.
“Although the incident was unintentional, the Elections Department has a zero-tolerance policy for errors, leading to the employee's termination,” stated the Miami-Dade County Elections Department. An election worker in Florida was fired after a truck incident resulted in sealed ballots falling onto the road.
