"ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit Says Goodbye to Beloved Dog Ben: 'Please Bless His Majestic Soul'"
Kirk Herbstreit, well-known ESPN college football analyst, shared a sorrowful update with fans today: his golden retriever and cherished service dog, Ben, has passed away. A constant companion both at home and on the road, Ben was more than a pet; he was a loyal friend to Herbstreit and adored by fans across the nation.
In a deeply moving announcement, ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit shared that his longtime companion, Ben, has died. Herbstreit’s golden retriever, known for his gentle nature and warm spirit, was a favorite with college football fans, often joining him at game day events to the delight of crowds.
Herbstreit, also a sportscaster on Amazon Prime, revealed that Ben had been struggling with cancer. The news of his passing comes shortly after Herbstreit asked fans for prayers, as Ben’s condition had been deteriorating. Ben was ultimately euthanized, as the cancer had spread throughout his organs, leaving the family with a difficult decision.
Herbstreit shared a heartfelt tribute on social media, acknowledging the outpouring of support for Ben. “This is incredibly difficult to write, but so many of you have shown love for Ben, so I wanted to let you know. We discovered today that Ben’s cancer had progressed beyond hope of recovery, and we had no choice but to let him go.”
Reflecting on his bond with Ben, Herbstreit wrote, “I’ve had dogs my whole life, but Ben was truly one of a kind. He was so smart, loving, and gentle, always welcoming everyone with a smile and a wagging tail. We communicated without words—he understood me, and I understood him. Whether at home or traveling for work, Ben was always by my side, an easygoing, loyal companion.”
The tribute continued, with Herbstreit honoring Ben’s impact on his family’s life. “It’s been a hard day, but Ben will live in our hearts forever,” he said, adding, “God, please bless his majestic soul. Thank you for letting me have him in my life for the past ten years—he was truly a gift.”
Ben was not just loved by Herbstreit but was also adored by fans nationwide. A certified emotional support animal, Ben offered Herbstreit comfort, especially during challenging times, including when his son Zak faced a serious health issue.
On November 4, just days before Ben’s passing, Herbstreit noted that Ben’s health had been declining significantly, despite chemotherapy and holistic treatments. Ben’s condition had worsened to the point where he could no longer walk or eat, and Herbstreit asked for fans’ prayers. “If you’re spiritual, I’d love it if you could pray for my boy. Please send your thoughts and hope he pulls through,” he had written.
Though today brings heartbreak, Herbstreit expressed gratitude for the time they shared. In Ben, Herbstreit found not only a companion but a true friend, whose memory will stay with him and fans alike.
