Rescuers Working to Save Deer with Large Bone Stuck in Her Mouth Near Hollywood Reservoir
California wildlife officials are racing against time to rescue a deer nicknamed "Floppy," who has been spotted near the Hollywood Reservoir with a large bone lodged in her mouth. First seen on October 11, Floppy has been struggling with what experts believe to be a femur bone stuck between her jaws, and she appears malnourished and injured.
Local residents, concerned for the deer's well-being, have shared photos and videos of the distressed animal on social media. One resident, Arlene Pileggi, told KTLA that it was "heartbreaking" to see the deer behind a chain-link fence without being able to help directly, though many people wanted to intervene.
Wildlife biologist Kevin Howells from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) explained that while it’s rare for deer to chew on bones, they may occasionally do so to supplement missing minerals in their diet. However, in Floppy’s case, the bone has become a serious hazard. "She's wounded, she's malnourished, and she feels vulnerable," Howells said, noting the deer’s declining health due to her inability to eat or drink properly.
The CDFW has attempted to track and immobilize the deer using tranquilizer darts but has so far been unsuccessful. They temporarily closed nearby hiking trails to assist in the search, hoping that once they locate Floppy, they can sedate her, remove the bone, treat her injuries, and release her back into the wild. Unfortunately, as of October 17, officials have not been able to find her despite spending several days searching.
Wildlife officials are relying on potential sightings from hikers and locals to pinpoint her location. Tim Daly, a spokesperson for the CDFW, remains hopeful that if they can immobilize the deer, they will be able to save her life and discover how the bone ended up in her mouth in the first place.
The unusual case has garnered widespread attention, with many expressing concern for the deer's well-being and eagerly awaiting updates on her condition. Wildlife rescue efforts continue as officials hope for a positive outcome.
