On September 5, in Gelderland, the farm’s security cameras captured a tense moment when a hawk swooped down to attack one of the chickens, a brown hen. Hawks are known predators of chickens, easily overpowering them with speed and sharp talons, often turning them into a meal in moments. In the footage, the hawk had the hen pinned and was closing in on victory, but just as it seemed the hen would meet her fate, her farm friends sprang into action. First on the scene was a brave rooster, charging headfirst at the hawk in a valiant attempt to protect the chicken, giving her a chance to break free. But the rescue didn’t end there: the farm’s goat, Bruin, also rushed in, adding his strength to the rooster’s efforts. Together, they successfully drove the hawk away, and the chickens were able to flee to the safety of their coop.
The farm’s owner, 59-year-old Jaap Beets, wasn’t present for the commotion but later watched the incredible scene unfold through CCTV footage. “I was so proud of the rooster and the goat for jumping in to defend our chicken,” he said in an interview with the Daily Mail. “I was also very relieved that the chicken survived.”
Surprisingly, this wasn’t the first time Jaap had witnessed such animal heroism on his farm. He revealed that in two previous incidents, his chickens were similarly attacked by other birds of prey, including a goshawk and a buzzard. On both occasions, other animals like the turkey and goats came to their defense. This extraordinary moment is a testament to the intelligence and bravery of farm animals. It’s heartwarming to see how they look out for one another in times of need.
