Volusia County – Florida: Florida was in the headlines as it had the highest amount of shark attacks in 2013. There have been more shark sightings off the coast of Volusia County than in the entire South African region, which is notorious for its shark habitat. There were 47 shark attacks nationwide, down from 54 in 2012, which was the highest yearly total of the current century. The were 72 shark attacks worldwide in 2013, the lowest global total since 2009 when there were 67 attacks.
