Scientists Discover First Known Hybrid Bird Species In The Amazon Rainforest
Hybrid species among vertebrates are exceedingly rare. Scientists have discovered the first known hybrid bird species to be found in the Amazon rainforest - a golden-crowned manakin (Lepidothrix vilasboasi) with yellow feathers.
"Without geographic isolation, its very likely this would never have happened because you don't see the hybrids evolving as separate species in other areas where both parental species meet," Weir said. This species is listed as Vulnerable because it is presumed to have a small population, which is believed to be declining owing to increased logging resulting from a rapidly increasing human population.
