The dog's expression of gratitude, captured in a touching photograph, has melted hearts around the world. Hillsborough County Fire Rescue has been one of many agencies working tirelessly in the aftermath of Hurricane Milton, which made landfall on October 9, leaving behind a trail of destruction. Captain Dusty Mascaro, a member of the department’s search and rescue team, discovered a Bernese mountain dog trapped in dangerously high waters. Without hesitation, Mascaro sprang into action, carrying the dog to safety. Once inside the safety of the vehicle, the dog gazed at Mascaro, its eyes filled with an unmistakable expression of gratitude. The image quickly went viral on social media, with the Hillsborough County Fire Rescue team sharing it on Facebook and describing the moment as "pure gratitude and love."

“This dog’s eyes say it all,” the department posted, highlighting the bond that formed in the midst of this rescue. The heartfelt post garnered widespread attention, with people commenting on the emotional impact of the dog's thankful expression. “You can see in his eyes that he knows he was saved,” one commenter said. Another added, “This is the perfect symbol of gratitude — that photo should be framed!” Many on social media even suggested that Captain Mascaro should adopt the dog, though it’s unclear whether the animal already has a home.

This rescue is just one example of the many lifesaving efforts underway since Hurricane Milton hit. Hillsborough County Fire Rescue reported on October 11 that they have saved 104 pets so far, ensuring that no creature, human or animal, is left behind in the aftermath of the storm. “We’re incredibly honored to serve and protect all members of our community, large and small,” the department shared in another update, acknowledging the scope of their rescue efforts.

Hurricane Milton, a Category 3 storm, brought massive destruction to Florida, leaving widespread property damage, power outages, and a tragic death toll of at least 24 people. But amidst the heartbreak, moments of hope and heroism, like the rescue of this grateful dog, offer comfort. We are deeply thankful for the bravery of Captain Mascaro and all first responders working to save lives. The dog’s soulful eyes truly say it all — he knows he’s safe, and he’s thankful to be alive.
