Kidman describes her experience in the role as “liberating” yet challenging. She revealed in interviews that at times, the intensity of the sex scenes left her feeling overwhelmed. “There was so much sharing and trust, but also frustration,” she noted. At one point, she had to pause filming, saying, “I don’t want to orgasm anymore,” reflecting on the emotional and physical toll the scenes took on her.
She elaborated on the emotional exhaustion she experienced during the shoot, recalling moments when she felt the need to shield herself from further contact: “I don’t care if I am never touched again in my life! I’m over it.” Despite the difficulty, she remained committed to exploring this raw and vulnerable side of her character.
The film’s director, Halina Reijn, drew inspiration from the classic sexual thriller Basic Instinct, which starred Sharon Stone. Reijn emphasized the importance of having a female perspective in such narratives, stating, “We wanted to explore new territory, especially with a woman at the helm.”
Babygirl’s plot centers on Romy, whose marriage is deteriorating as she engages in this reckless affair, putting her career and family at risk. Kidman has called this her most exposing role to date, saying, “I’ve done some revealing films, but nothing like this. I really put myself out there.”
Reflecting on the filming process, she noted how it left her feeling both vulnerable and raw. “I never really came out of it,” she admitted. “I had to keep putting my protective barriers back up after every scene.”
In discussing her apprehension about audiences seeing Babygirl, Kidman praised the supportive environment created by Reijn on set, where they could discuss their experiences candidly. “Halina has this maternal instinct, and she was very protective of me, which made a big difference,” Kidman said.
Reijn, for her part, believes they succeeded in creating an undeniably steamy film. “We made a really hot movie,” she confidently stated, leaving the judgment of its quality to the audience.
