Wildlife biologist Kevin Howells from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) explained that while it’s rare for deer to chew on bones, they may occasionally do so to supplement missing minerals in their diet. However, in Floppy’s case, the bone has become a serious hazard. "She's wounded, she's malnourished, and she feels vulnerable," Howells said, noting the deer’s declining health due to her inability to eat or drink properly.

The CDFW has attempted to track and immobilize the deer using tranquilizer darts but has so far been unsuccessful. They temporarily closed nearby hiking trails to assist in the search, hoping that once they locate Floppy, they can sedate her, remove the bone, treat her injuries, and release her back into the wild. Unfortunately, as of October 17, officials have not been able to find her despite spending several days searching.

Wildlife officials are relying on potential sightings from hikers and locals to pinpoint her location. Tim Daly, a spokesperson for the CDFW, remains hopeful that if they can immobilize the deer, they will be able to save her life and discover how the bone ended up in her mouth in the first place.
