Tulsi Gabbard, the former Democratic presidential candidate and U.S. Congress representative for Hawaii's second district from 2013 to 2021, has officially announced her switch to the Republican Party during a rally for former President Donald Trump in Greensboro, North Carolina. This event is significant, especially as North Carolina is a crucial swing state in the upcoming election.

Recently, Gabbard has taken on a prominent role in the Trump campaign, serving as an honorary co-chair for his transition team alongside Robert F. Kennedy Jr., another notable figure who has moved away from the Democratic Party.

At the rally, Gabbard expressed her respect for Trump’s leadership, stating that he has worked to transform the Republican Party back into a "party of the people" and a "party of peace." "I'm proud to stand here with you today, President Trump, and announce that I'm joining the Republican Party. I am joining the party of the people," she declared. She emphasized that the Republican Party stands for equality and historical values, mentioning its origins in the fight against slavery. "It is the party of common sense, led by a president who has the courage and strength to fight for peace," she added.

Trump responded positively, acknowledging Gabbard's shift: "Thank you very much, Tulsi. That's great. Wow, that was a surprise. She’s been independent for a long time. That’s a great thing. A great honor."

Gabbard's political journey has been notable; she served as vice chair of the Democratic National Committee from 2013 to 2016 before resigning to endorse Senator Bernie Sanders for president. In the 2020 Democratic primary, she notably confronted Kamala Harris during a debate, challenging her record as a prosecutor, particularly regarding marijuana-related cases and the cash bail system in California. After leaving the Democratic Party in 2022 and branding herself as an independent, Gabbard has been active in conservative circles, hosting her own podcast and participating in various events.
